Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro successor

The ultra compact smartphone niche has obviously brought enough cash to Sony Ericsson as it is just about to release a successor to their X10 mini pro. The new device is yet unnamed (though X12 mini pro seems like a reasonable guess), but seems to fix all there was to fix about its predecessor. With a slightly larger 3" screen of higher resolution and far more computing power, the new tiny QWERTY-equipped device seems to be to the rumored X12, exactly what the X10 mini pro was to the X10. The keyboard is not actually visible on the leaked shots, but the Chinese source assures us that it's there.

Sony Ericsson MT15 Hallon and LT15 Anzu leak

We just spotted some new info, pictures and camera samples from a brand new Sony Ericsson smartphone - the MT15 codenamed Hallon plus the previously leaked LT15 Anzu a.k.a. XPERIA X12. Sony Ericsson MT15 Hallon looks much like the XPERIA X12 Anzu, but has a beefier front-facing camera.

The Hallon leaked via a Picasa album and is shot with a device called Sony Ericsson LT15. Rumor has it that the LT15 is the previously leaked XPERIA X12 Anzu and it's supposed to pack a 12 megapixel camera. The samples in the Picasa album are only 8 megapixel so it's not the full resolution of the camera or the LT15 could be a new unannounced device and not the 12 megapixel Anzu we are waiting for.

New XPERIA phones at MWC 2011, possibly the XPERIA Play too

Sony Ericsson has sent out the invites for ther Mobile World Congress event and they promise to introduce us to new members of the XPERIA family. While they don’t mention any names, the rumored PS Phone is a likely attendee. The Mobile World Congress 2011 starts on 14 February but Sony Ericsson as usual will hold their event a day earlier to steal the spotlight.

The PlayStation Phone goes by XPERIA Play, launches in April

The long rumored Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone won't be announced on CES next month, but on the MWC 11 in February. It will hit the stores in April under the name of XPERIA Play. Quite some news, right? According to trust-worthy Pocket-Lint sources, the Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone will premiere on the Sunday's Sony Ericsson press conference during the MWC in February. It won't be released immediately, but will hit the shelves sometime in April.

Sony Ericsson Yendo review: A touch of Walkman

The Sony Ericsson Yendo is still a couple of months away from launch and we hope the time is used wisely. There’s quite a few software-related things to polish. The sluggish user interface for one ruins the fun of having such a neat and good looking touch phone.  There’re too many unknowns with the Yendo and perhaps the slow processor should not take all the blame. After all, this is a feature phone with a small low-res screen and few power-hungry apps. The software package is far from final, so we shouldn’t be too tough on the phone. But at this point it’s obvious there’s a lot of tweaking to do before launch.

Then, the Walkman branding is raising more questions than answers. Ease of use and good looks are key in a low-end touch phone but you can’t help but notice the media package here is just a bit too basic. The Yendo has no accelerometer, hence no fancy features such as Shake Control. There’s no integrated Media Menu to begin with. The poor file management is a letdown too.

Having repeatedly praised the interface of Sony Ericsson feature phones, we’re afraid we can’t hide our disappointment with the Yendo. What we miss the most is the Activity Menu – a quick way to access favorites and the event log – not to mention the Running Apps tab. In fact – smart dial and the multitasking ability were the great Sony Ericsson advantages in feature phones. None of them is enabled on the Yendo. And there’re no homescreen widgets either.

We’ll skip the unimpressive camera and the basic web browser - after all imaging and web aren’t meant to be Yendo’s full-time jobs.

We’ve been painting a rather bleak picture but these are all things users will be right to expect in a Walkman - albeit an entry-level phone. Not least, the Yendo isn’t exactly short of rivals in the basic touch phone segment.

The Sony Ericsson LiveView micro display picking up speed

The Sony Ericsson LiveView micro display has been selling for a few weeks only, but the number of compatible plug-ins is higher than you might suspect.

So there's no reason to feel sorry for buying it - the full touch accessory is getting more and more useful with each passing day. The list of apps compatible with the little thing is way larger than expected and new plug-ins show up over at the Android Market all the time.

Sony Ericsson working on Froyo for XPERIA X10, coming in Q2

How about that, Sony Ericsson is secretively working on a Froyo update for their XPERIA X10. Unfortunately, this update won't come before Q2 2011. But you know what - it's actually sad cause at that time Google will probably be outing Android 3.0.

Sony Ericsson feeds Eclair to XPERIA X8, it grows new features

XPERIA junior - the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 - has joined the X10 party and getting the Android 2.1 Eclair update. Just like the X10 minis, there are some additional improvements to the X8 software. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 uses pretty much the same software package as the XPERIA X10 and X10 mini, so when they get updated, the update for X8 is close behind (and bringing the same improvements).

Sony Ericsson PSP phone might be announced on 9 December

It was just a month ago when we first saw those pictures of a prototype Sony Ericsson PSP phone. Now more pieces of information lead us to believe that Sony Ericsson France is holding a special event on the 9th of December to announce something about a phone and gaming. We are sure the PSP fans are eager to know more about the rumored PSP phone. What we know so far is that the device has similarities with Sony Ericsson Vivaz design, but instead of a keyboard it should pack the typical PSP controls and a multi-touch trackpad.

Work Ongoing on Pinch Zoom for XPERIA X10

This is to confirm that we are working on enabling Pinch Zoom for the XPERIA X10. The work with this has progressed and the plan is that this will be enabled through an over-the-air update of the X10 that for most markets will come in Q1 2011. For more information on background and what to expect please read the corresponding blog post at http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/product...

First look Sony Ericsson Anzu (XPERIA X12)

Sony Ericsson's Android devices are beginning to grow in numbers and still trying to keep up in the OS's race that Google starts with a new version every few months. So far all the XPERIA Android devices were relying more on their design and features rather than Android version in order to attract as many customers as they could. This approach was neither a successful nor a failed one since the sales generated from these phones where at least acceptable for the manufacturer's position on the market.

Here we have one of the next generation devices from Sony Ericsson that will try to fill the top end of their lineup for the first months of 2011. X12 or Anzu will hit the market with 2.2 Froyo and will probably be updated to 2.3 Gingerbread at some point in the late summer of 2011. At least this time, the device will come out with the Android version found in most other high-end devices and the majority of these phones will not be updated to Gingerbread yet. However, by the time X12 hits the market, there probably will be some new devices already available and running Gingerbread out of the box. Still for Sony Ericsson, being just one OS version behind the others on the release date of X12 is a step forward.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 (Android 2.1) review: Eclairs for dinner

So where does the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 stand after the update? It didn’t quite manage to take over at the top of the smartphone food chain, but to be honest we never actually expected it to. One year is a really long time in this business and understandably competitors haven’t been standing still. However not coming straight from the R&D labs brings a huge pricing advantage to the X10. Indeed it can be found for nearly half the Desire HD price, which makes it a pretty decent bargain.
With Eclair virtually all the functionality is already there and compatibility with Android Market apps has been expanded greatly. The performance also takes a great leap forward and while it’s still not at Froyo levels, it’s good enough not to be bothering. So as a result you get a device that won’t give you bragging rights but will give you all that it promises and throw in a few nice surprises on top (particularly for video enthusiasts and social network lovers). Sounds like a package that’s good enough for us.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 successor, the Anzu, spotted

It's only been a week since the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 got its long awaited Android 2.1 update and now we get to meet its successor, the Anzu a.k.a. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X12. The first live shot of the rumored device has just been spotted in the wild and word is the smartphone is about to arrive in Q1 2011. As for the Sony Ericsson Anzu features, the things is said to be "very, very slim" and to pack a large 4.3" display, a secondary video-call camera, an HDMI port as well as a 12MP camera with 720p video recording.

Black Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 is going to have a nice piano black version in addition to its white and white-dark blue models. And also, if you already own an X8, you should know that the Android 2.1 Eclair update will be released before the end of the year.

A few official pictures of the black XPERIA X8 have leaked recently, but it's just today when we see an actual black X8 in action. The front is matte black, while the back is glossy - think piano black.

More Info XPERIA Software Update

First of all – sorry for this blog going and up and down lately, the traffic has been increasing more than expected and we struggle with keeping it online.

Regarding the update it is now out for the first kits, Nordics since yesterday and I’ve also seen that the generic trade kits for Russia, Singapore, Indonesia and many African countries should be up now since earlier today.

There are more kits coming this week and then it continues over the weeks after.

As said earlier I will unfortunately not be able to have detailed information in advance since it all depends on when the different approvals drop in. I will however try to give updates on this blog, probably both in the comments section and as new posts when there are a bunch of new ones available.

There has been several questions in the comments section here but because of the state of the blog I haven’t been able to answer as I would have wanted. I really apologize for not being able to be more active! I have focused on chasing more information around the update and keeping the blog servers online.

Some FAQs that I’ve found in many places:

Sony Ericsson X8 review: XPERIA in the middle - GSMArena.com

Sony Ericsson X8 review: XPERIA in the middle - Final words
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 has just made it to the market but parts of it still seem stuck in last year. At the same time though it is more than decently equipped for its 170 euro price tag. It has its downsides and those are easy to notice but there are a bunch of plusses too, especially if you are new to Android.

The Timescape app is one of the good things about the XPERIA X8. Another one is the four-corner touch UI which is user-friendly and makes good use of the screen estate. There is a great set of connectivity options too and, last but not least, the X8 screen is standard-issue 320 x 480 pixels. If you’ve been paying attention you’d know we’re not too fond of QVGA droids. The XPERIA X10 minis have a legitimate excuse.

And while we’re at it: the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini and X10 mini pro have a 2.55” QVGA display each. That’s small and low-res but we’re talking some of the smallest smartphones ever. The important point is whether and how the X8 benefits from the added size and pixel density.

The X8 gives the user interface a lot more room to work with and handling is more user-friendly. Standard resolution lets the phone make better use of the Android market. On the bigger screen web browsing is now a different story.

On the other hand, there’s still no multi-touch and banding is perhaps more annoying than on the minis. In the end though, the X8 makes more sense for routine everyday tasks. The X10 minis are in a different league. They’re so small they’re special. And obviously still more expensive – both cost over 200 euro each.

Another option is the LG GT540 Optimus (priced at less than 150 euro) or maybe its recently announced successor, the upcoming Optimus One P500. The Optimus comes with a resistive touchscreen and the same limited storage for apps but its camera has autofocus and its Android 2.1 update has already been released. But while the Optimus One seems like a more viable alternative, it’s expected to cost around 235 euro.

Last but not least, there’s the HTC Wildfire. With a multi-touch-enabled 3.2” screen, a 5MP autofocus snapper, HTC Sense and premium finish, it is all but ready to blow the X8 apart. However, the QVGA touchscreen ruins it all – it’s just too low to let the Wildfire deliver a proper Android user experience. The HTC Wildfire costs around 30 euro more than the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 but we won’t fuss it.

If we have to name one phone that we’ll choose over the X8 any day, no questions asked, it would be the HTC Aria (or its just announced twin, the HTC Gratia). But – and it’s a big one – the price tag is a big part of the equation. The X8 is hard to beat really if budget is your first concern.

Let’s face it: the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 misses the wow factor. It has something else instead – a fair price and a well balanced set of features. Can’t be so bad now, can it? Unfortunately, it can. And while the competition isn’t too hard at least for a while, Sony Ericsson are damaging their own prospects by taking too long with the Android upgrades.

Sony Ericsson Talks Tablets And Google

Sony Ericsson President Bert Nordberg spent his first six months on the job slashing costs and paring projects to get the handset maker out of the red. The payoff came Friday: a first-quarter profit of $28.4 million that ended nearly two years of losses.
Nordberg, who previously headed Silicon Valley research and development efforts for Sony Ericsson parent Ericsson ( ERIC - news - people ), isn't resting yet. In the coming months Sony Ericsson will launch smartphones with U.S. carriers, introduce a handset based on Microsoft's ( MSFT - news - people ) new Windows Phone 7 software and tie its phones to parent company Sony's TVs and computers, Nordberg told Forbes during a meeting in New York. Sony Ericsson is also considering developing non-phone devices and collaborating with Google ( GOOG - news - people ) on a Google-designed phone that would be sold online, Nordberg said.
